I just learned from Mapgirl’s Fiscal Challenge that October 21st-27th is National Save for Retirement Week. She apparently heard about it from another personal finance blogger. My question is, does anyone outside of people who read and/or write personal finance blogs know about National Save for Retirement Week? Because those people are probably already well aware of their need to save for retirement.
I spend a lot of time reading blogs and the news and so I figure if I’m just now reading about it then there have got to be a whole lot of people who have no idea that there is such a thing as National Save for Retirement Week.
I think having a National Save for Retirement Week is a great idea. But it’s only so useful if people know about it. With the baby boomers preparing to descend on Social Security like a plague of locusts and the executive and legislative branches at at a perpetual stalemate over what to do about Social Security’s impending doom, it would be a great thing to really start getting the word out to all Americans that they had better start planning for their retirement now.
Last week saw Blog Action Day where all sorts of different bloggers blogged about the environment for one day. Maybe next year the same should be done for National Save for Retirement Week. Yeah, I know blogging about retirement planning isn’t as sexy or hip as blogging about the environment but it’s just as important. We took some time to encourage people to think about the Earth’s future, why not take some time to urge people to think about their own futures? I’d love to see something like that happen but it would have to make it outside the confines of the money and finance blogosphere.
